Lot Notes

Sean Scully is an Irish-born abstract painter and printmaker who has been nominated twice for the Turner Prize.

In spite of initially adopting a hard-edge style, Scully became increasingly fascinated by the motif of the stripe, which he has continuously developed and refined. In recent years, for instance, he has conceived of a compositional patterning that resembles a checkerboard. According to Scully, this stylistic choice was influenced by the nature of his native country: "I remember growing up in Ireland and everything being chequered, even the fields and the people."

This image represented the main poster for the 100th edition of the French Open that took place in 2001.

This lot comes framed.
