Robert Indiana was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, from which he adopted his artist name. He spent 17 years of his life moving from one city to another, eventually living in 21 different homes. His artwork usually consists of bold, iconic, simple messages, such as EAT, HUG and his well-known LOVE. Robert Indiana was the star of Andy Warhol's film Eat (1964), a 45-minute film of Indiana eating a mushroom in his SoHo loft.
