A complex work by internationally acclaimed Romanian artist Paul Neagu was sold at the Lavacow Spring Auction for €15 000 against an estimate of €2000 -€4000.
Bronze Hand is complementary to Full Hand and Empty Hand, two companion works created by Neagu between 1970 and 1971, which are now included in the collection of Tate Museum. The lot had previously belonged to Marina Dimitropoulos.
Though conceived in the shape of a hand, the work can be disassembled and reconstructed by the spectator, its tactile quality thus emphasising Neagu’s belief that "you can take things in better, more completely, with your ten fingers, pores and mucous membranes than with only two eyes."
Works by important Romanian artists including Florin Mitroi, Horia Bernea, Francisc Chiuariu, Corneliu Baba, Gili Mocanu, Marcel Iancu were also successfully sold at the Lavacow Spring Auction, alongside lots by Andy Warhol, Marc Chagall and Fred Stiven.
